De acordo com Daniel Boorstin em seu livro “The Americans” (Os Americanos), o Natal não era um acontecimento importante até os anos 1860. O ano de 1867 foi o primeiro em que a loja de departamentos Macy’s, em Nova Iorque, ficou aberta até meia-noite na noite de Natal e 1874 foi quando surgiram as primeiras vitrines com temas natalinos nessa loja.
